SMART Pocket WiFi Now Available Under Unlimited Plan 999

SMART Communications is now offering their Pocket WiFi device under the unlimited internet plan 999. You will have to pay a one-time fee of 800 Pesos for the device. And just like other unlimited plans with tied up devices, you will be under a lock-up contract of 24 months. Previously, they only offers this at plan 599 with 50 hours of internet surfing per month.

SMART Pocket Wifi

SMART Pocket Wifi

The Pocket WiFi device is made by Huawei, the largest manufacturer of telecommunication equipment and devices in China. It can connect five different devices at a time. The battery life though is just enough for five hours. The package comes with a USB cord for tethering and charging.

SMART claims that the SIM inside the device can deliver up to 7.2 Mbps of internet speed but it depends on many factors such as signal strength and internet traffic congestion.

To apply, visit the nearest SMART Sales office bringing the following requirements:

- Identification (valid IDs)
- Proof of Billing address (any bill or statement under your name with address on it)
- 800 Pesos (one-time fee) for the Pocket WiFi device

 Open Line Pocket WiFi device

If you don’t want to be under the 24-month contract of SMART, you can just buy a prepaid SIM of any network (SMART, Globe, or Sun). Then buy the original Huawei-made device. The current price is 4000 Pesos and is available in selected electronic stores here in the country. For those in Cebu, you can buy it at Ingenius Stores in Ayala Center, IT Park, and SM City Cebu.

Huawei Pocket WiFi

SMART also offers an unlimited 999 postpaid SIM with a lock-in period of just 6 months.

How to Register Sun Unlimited Internet?

I already wrote about how to register to the unlimited internet in SMART (Unlisurf) and Globe (Supersurf) networks. Now, I’m going to show how to register Sun Unlimited Internet Broadband.

First, you have to insert your prepaid SUN Broadband SIM card in a mobile device that can access its SMS ability. It could be a simple cell phone, smartphone, pocket wifi, dongle, or Broadband Plug-it device. The last three devices should be connected to a computer to reach the SMS Menu.

Once inserted, wait until the signal stabilizes. Then send the following codes to 247.

i50 – 1 day sun unlimited internet

i50 ON - 1 day sun unlimited internet – recurring every 7 days

i100 – 3 days sun unlimited internet

i250 – 7 days sun unlimited internet

The i50 costs 51 pesos, the i100 registration costs 101 Pesos, and so on and so fort. The extra 1 peso is for registration charge.

Sun Unlimited Internet

Sun Cellular

Sun Unlimited Internet Speed vs SMART vs Globe

I don’t have data from a systematic test that will give us conclusive answer on who among the three telcos provides the fastest speed and most reliable internet connection. But based on experience and feedback from other users, I concluded the following:

1. If you are located in a place where there is good Sun 3G signal, then Sun Broadband is the best choice for you. It offers the cheapest and the most stable connection among the three. The reason behind is that Sun Cellular has the newest mobile telecommunication equipment among the three networks.

2. If you are mobile and shifts place often, the best choice probably is SMART. SMART Bro has the widest coverage among the three options.

3. If the only 3G Signal available in your place is Globe, then choose Globe. Based on my experience, Globe has the worst service among the three.

Cellular Signal is Not Always 3G

There is a common misconception among users about cellular signal. Most think that if there is a call and text signal in a place, then you can have internet connection. But that’s not always true. Cellular network technology are classified into several types or categories. For example, Call and Text signals are just GSM networks that are designed to handle voice calls and SMS only. For internet connection, you should have at least an EDGE or the more common 3G signal. 3G networks provides the required bandwidth to transfer internet data (video, text, images, audio, etc). To make sure that your place has a coverage for mobile internet connectivity, visit the nearest sales office of your chosen provider.

Google Free Zone Philippines – Free Google Access Via Globe

Google Free Zone is now in the Philippines and in fact, the Philippines is the first country where this Google initiative goes live.

What is Google Free Zone?

Google Free Zone allows users of mobile phone to use Google Search, Google+ and Gmail without charges. You do not need to have a data plan, just your ordinary phone service will work. Here in the Philippines, Google has partnered with Globe in the project. It means, Google subsidized all the data consumed by the user using the three Google services mentioned.

Google Free Zone works only to mobile phones with a browser. Feature phones with WAP browsers up to smartphones like Android and iPhones with fully functional mobile browsers will work. Tablets and PCs won’t work.

Google Free Zone Philippines

Google Free Zone Philippines via Globe Telecoms

On Clicking Links and Attachments

Google Free Zone aims to reach billions of people in developing countries who do not have access to broadband connections. But there are certain actions that will incur a charge from the service provider. Here’s some of them.

1. Viewing an image outside Google or Gmail.
2. Viewing an email attachment.
3. Clicking a link on the results page will not incur charge and will allow you to view the webpage for free. But clicking a link on that webpage will incur charges.

Don’t worry much about this rules. Globe will pop-out a warning before you do anything that will incur charges.

Google Free Zone and Facebook Zero

Remember Facebook Zero? Similar to Google Free Zone, Facebook Zero allows users to view their Facebook accounts for free but there are also actions that may incur charges.

If you are asking how Google and Facebook benefit in these “free” (subsidized) services, well, the answer is simple: advertisement. I’m not sure if either Google or Facebook serves ads on pages viewed using these free services. If not now, it is likely that they will do in the future to compensate for the expenses.

For more details about how to activate Google Free Zone on your phones, please check this link:

Google Maps for iOS? Nope, but you can have an icon instead

For those still not aware, Apple has already ditched Google’s mapping service in the latest version of their iOS mobile operating system. In replacement, Apple released their internally developed mapping service called Apple Maps. A few weeks ago, the service has gone live upon the release of iPhone 5 and the iOS 6.

People are not happy with Apple Maps
Surprisingly though, Apple Maps enraged many customers complaining about the inaccuracy and lack of data. Some inaccuracies are big such as misplaced cities and landmarks. The customer backlash has reached the point where Apple needs to issue an official public apology promising to make a fix as soon as possible. But from the look of it, it would be a hard job to do. Google has by far, the most data among all the mapping service. And ever since the first iOS device made into the market, Google has always been there as a default app. Customers are already accustomed to Google from day 1 of the iPhone.

Google Teaches iOS Users How to Access Their Maps in the Home Screen
Many expected Google to release a Map App for iOS, just like what they did when Apple ditched YouTube. Well, that hope has died down because one of Google’s leaders confirmed that they are not making an App for iOS. But in a blogpost, Google taught users how to access Google Maps from the home screen of Apple devices. Here’s the procedure.

1. In Safari, go to maps.google.com
20120930-133740.jpg

2. In the top bar to tap on the arrow and select, “add to home screen”.
20120930-133840.jpg

3. You can change the name of the icon.
.
20120930-133940.jpg

After the above steps, you will have an icon for Google Maps in the homescreen.
