Google Free Zone Philippines – Free Google Access Via Globe

Google Free Zone is now in the Philippines and in fact, the Philippines is the first country where this Google initiative goes live.

What is Google Free Zone?

Google Free Zone allows users of mobile phone to use Google Search, Google+ and Gmail without charges. You do not need to have a data plan, just your ordinary phone service will work. Here in the Philippines, Google has partnered with Globe in the project. It means, Google subsidized all the data consumed by the user using the three Google services mentioned.

Google Free Zone works only to mobile phones with a browser. Feature phones with WAP browsers up to smartphones like Android and iPhones with fully functional mobile browsers will work. Tablets and PCs won’t work.

On Clicking Links and Attachments

Google Free Zone aims to reach billions of people in developing countries who do not have access to broadband connections. But there are certain actions that will incur a charge from the service provider. Here’s some of them.

1. Viewing an image outside Google or Gmail.
2. Viewing an email attachment.
3. Clicking a link on the results page will not incur charge and will allow you to view the webpage for free. But clicking a link on that webpage will incur charges.

Don’t worry much about this rules. Globe will pop-out a warning before you do anything that will incur charges.

Google Free Zone and Facebook Zero

Remember Facebook Zero? Similar to Google Free Zone, Facebook Zero allows users to view their Facebook accounts for free but there are also actions that may incur charges.

If you are asking how Google and Facebook benefit in these “free” (subsidized) services, well, the answer is simple: advertisement. I’m not sure if either Google or Facebook serves ads on pages viewed using these free services. If not now, it is likely that they will do in the future to compensate for the expenses.

Microsoft Ditches Hotmail, Introduces Outlook.com

Microsoft has re-branded their free web-mail service. From Hotmail, it will now be called Outlook.com.

Outlook.com have revamped Microsoft’s email interface making it clutter-free with touches echoing Metro style which is common to new Microsoft products such as Windows Phone 7 and Windows. Outlook.com have also integrated Skype video calls into their email service.

People – More Social

In replacement to Contacts, Microsoft added the People app (introduced in WP7). With that Microsoft  was able to make Outlook.com more social. Using this feature, you can import your contacts from other social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Google.

Upgrade from Hotmail.com to Outlook.com email address

If you have existing Hotmail account, you have the option to either retain your old @hotmail.com address or you can switch to a new @outlook.com email address. Don’t worry about your contacts and old emails because even if you upgraded to Outlook.com, you will still have your original mails and the new messages to your old @hotmail.com address will now be redirected to your @outlook.com account. But whether you choose to upgrade or not, the user interface will still be updated.

Other features such as Calendar and Skydrive will still be there.

Blogger Now Supports Threaded Commenting System

Česky: Toto je ikona pro sociální síť. Je souč...

Image via Wikipedia

Good news to bloggers who use Google’s Blogger platform (i.e Blogspot). Today, Blogger introduces the support for threaded comments. Before, Blogger just uses plain comments in contrast so its hard to see to whom the comment was directed to – either on the author or to one of the comments. Now, with threaded comments, you can clearly see to whom the reply was directed to.

Threaded comments has been a here for a long time now. WordPress default commeting system has it. This is also true with other commenting services such as Disqus and Intense Debate.

How to Activate Threaded Comments on Blogger?

To Activate threaded comments on Blogger, you just need to make sure that the following options are set like this:

- Make sure that the Allow Blog Feed is set in “Full”.

blog feed

Set blog feed as "full"

- Enable comments and set Comment Location as “Embedded”.

Set Comment Location as "embedded"

After those settings, you can now see the reply button on the comments in your blog posts.

One of the buzz topic for the day is none other than Bourne Legacy lead actor Jeremy Renner. News says he already arrived in Manila for a few days of shooting.

As expected, Cebu is slowly climbing up the top trending list as the festival of Sinulog is fast approaching.

The day is still young and I’m pretty sure there will be more interesting new topics later.

Yesterday is Page 2 of 366, which represents the second day of 2012 (with 366 days due to leap year). Now, Page of 3 of 366 is at the top spot of twitter trends for the Philippines and just like yesterday, as more and more countries welcomes January 3, it will slowly climb up in the worldwide trends list.

Page 2 of 366 – Trending on Twitter Philippines

Here’s a not-so-important news article but for those curious, you may find it interesting.

I checked my twitter account this morning and I saw this topic as trending in the Philippines: Page 2 of 366. At first glance, it’s meaningless so out of curiosity, I checked out Google to find out about it but I saw nothing relevant.

Then after checking out the tweets, it finally dawned on me that actually, Page 2 of 366 is just a countdown of the entire year 2012. Yes, 366 stands for the 366 days of year 2012 (leap year). Page 2 represents the second day of the year, January 2, 2012. So tomorrow, we can at least expect a Page 3 of 366 as trending, then Page 4 of 366 and so on.

But I am curious on how long this gimmick (which I don’t know who started) will last. It was currently trending in Twitter Philippines and not on the worldwide scale.
